Israeli Channel 12 TV reported that a heated argument broke out between Defense Minister Yoav Galant and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the controversial Haredi conscription law.

According to the channel, Galant told Netanyahu: “This is a sensitive time. An agreement must be reached on the return of the kidnapped. The political attempt to link the release of the kidnapped to exempting the ultra-Orthodox from the draft is dangerous and irresponsible.”

As for Netanyahu, who believes that the conscription law is for political purposes, he said: “What you are doing with the conscription law is the height of mockery and politicization. There is a law that greatly increases the conscription of ultra-Orthodox Jews.”

Channel 12 reported that Netanyahu and Galant have different views on the ceasefire in Gaza.

Relations between the Israeli prime minister and his defense minister have been tense since Netanyahu briefly fired Galant in March 2023 after he publicly called for a freeze on the prime minister’s judicial reform plan, warning that it was harming national security.

The dismissal led to a wave of protests and strikes, and Netanyahu quickly froze many of the provisions of his plan and returned Galant to his position.
