A tragedy has plunged the Salvadoran population into mourning. In the line of duty, the General Commissioner of the National Civil Police, Mauricio Arriaza Chicas, died on the night of September 8, when the helicopter he was flying after arresting the former manager of COSAVI, to be brought before the Salvadoran justice system, crashed in the Canton of San Eduardo, in Pasaquina, La Unión Norte.

Commissioner Arriaza Chicas worked impeccably to transform the social reality of the country under the administration of President Nayib Bukele. On June 1, 2019, just hours after being sworn in as president of El Salvador, Bukele appointed Arriaza Chicas as police chief, and from the very beginning he became a key figure in the president’s offensive against gangs.

Following his tragic earthly departure, the Salvadoran president described Arriaza as “a fundamental piece in bringing peace and security” to the Salvadoran people, as well as a “loyal and incorruptible” man.

“He was not just any police director; he was the director of the Territorial Control Plan, the Exceptional Regime, and the War Against Gangs,” he wrote on the social network X.

It should be noted that Arriza Chicas was part of the first generation of the PNC, this after its foundation, following the Human Agreements; Arriaza Chicas became the first General Commissioner of the PNC and the director of the Police in the first government of President Bukele (2019-2024). The recognition of General Commissioner was delivered by the Salvadoran president.
