A huge explosion was recorded last night (Friday) in the Burj a-Shamali refugee camp in the Lebanese city of Tzur, where Hamas weapons depots were found. Security sources said at least 12 people were injured in the blast. Hezbollah rescue vehicles were called to help evacuate casualties from the site.

Hamas confirmed that the blast occurred as a result of a fire that reached the organization’s ammunition depot, which was hidden in the basement of a mosque in the refugee camp. The mosque, along with a residential building and an adjoining shop, were destroyed in the fierce explosion, but at this stage it is not yet known if there were any dead on the spot.

Sources in the terrorist organization told the Al-Akhbar newspaper that the ammunition held at the site was “intended for defense purposes.” According to eyewitnesses, the exploded warehouse contained a number of rockets and bombs of various types. The media reported that the fire started at a fuel storage facility, and from there spread to a mosque where the weapons were hidden. Following the blast, the Lebanese army besieged the area near the arena, and residents of the area were banned from leaving their homes.
