Kozhikode: A fire broke out at the Kozhikode showroom of Jayalakshmi Silks, a leading clothing company, causing a loss of crores. No casualty. A fire broke out in the showroom on Anihall Road, Palayam at around six in the morning yesterday. Billboards on the walls of the showroom caught fire and fell down, burning two cars in the parking area.

Due to the timely intervention of the fire brigade, a major disaster was averted. Many business establishments are operating near the showroom. There is a petrol station nearby. 20 fire brigade units from Kozhikode and Malappuram brought the fire under control after three hours. As it was the season of Vishu and Ramzan, a large amount of cloth was stocked.

Security staff at the showroom first spotted the fire and smoke rising from the top floor of the three-storey building. Efforts to douse the fire were started immediately and the fire brigade was informed. Firefighters were initially unable to enter the showroom due to heavy fire and smoke inside the building. The fire was brought under control after more than an hour of spraying water from outside to eliminate the possibility of fire spreading. The textiles stored on the second floor were completely burnt.

The initial conclusion is that short circuit may be the cause of the fire.

Mystery: Mayor

Mayor Bina Philip, who visited the place, said that the fire at Jayalakshmi Silks is mysterious. Electrical inspectors should conduct thorough inspections of all establishments. The Mayor said that more can be said only after the police conduct an investigation regarding the fire.

However, Jayalakshmi authorities rejected the Mayor’s allegation. The shop was closed after ensuring that all people were out of the establishment. Manager K said that all the main switches in the establishment were turned off and the cause of the fire should be investigated. Ajesh said.
