The Hungarian authorities have imposed this Friday a fine of 32,000 euros against aa bookstore for selling a graphic novel with LGTBI contentwhich is the largest fine imposed in the country for the dissemination of books on this subject.

“It is the largest fine ever imposed on a book distributor in Hungary,” said Krisztian Nyary, director of the company, who pointed out that the book, titled ‘Heartstopper’by Alice Oseman, addresses issues such as homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality.

Hungarian legislation, which equates homosexuality with pedophilia, prohibits the sale of copies dealing with this type of subject or sexuality itself in sections intended for a young audience.

So, this type of material is only available to people over 18 years of age. The book in question – which talks about two teenagers who fall in love – had been recommended for minors aged 14 and over.

However, Nyary has assured that the company will go to court considering that in these cases “the law is inapplicable.”
