Dan Rapoport, a Jewish businessman known as a staunch opponent of Russian President Putin, was found dead in Washington, DC.

The circumstances of his death are still being investigated, but the police informed that they arrived at his residence, in a luxurious tower, after suspecting that he planned to commit suicide.

Rapoport, 52, was born in Latvia and supported the Russian opposition while working in Moscow as a director of a securities trading firm. He supported the opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is currently in prison. Rapoport finally left the country in 2012 and lived for several years in Washington, before selling his home to Ivanka Trump, the former president’s daughter. He then moved to Kiev, and became involved in local politics.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Rapoport issued numerous quotes in the Ukrainian media against the Kremlin, and he made his support for the Ukrainian side clear on social media.

His wife, Alina Rapoport, who still lives in Ukraine, told Russian media that they planned to meet again soon after the war disrupted their plans. “We were supposed to meet, he planned to meet with me and we had already made plans. Dan took us out of Kiev and returned there in order to help my country. We should have met again in the US.”

She denied claims in the Russian media that her husband left behind a suicide note and let his dog loose in a nearby park after breaking up with Alina earlier this year. “There was no letter,” she emphasized, “it is not a suicide.”
