Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Arab leaders and the Iranian president participated in the Saudi capital on Saturday in a joint Arab and Islamic summit that is expected to confirm demands to stop the Israeli attacks on Gaza before the scope of violence expands in the region.

The emergency meetings of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation come in light of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip following a bloody attack carried out by the movement on October 7 inside the Hebrew state, which, according to Israel, led to the killing of 1,200 people according to a new toll and the kidnapping of 239 hostages.

The violent bombing campaign and Israeli ground attack since that date led to the deaths of more than 11,078 people, including more than 4,506 children, according to the latest toll announced by the Hamas government’s Ministry of Health on Friday.

The Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation were originally supposed to hold two separate summits, but the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced early Saturday that an “extraordinary joint Arab-Islamic summit” would be held on an exceptional basis on Saturday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement on its account on the “Islamic State will confront it and contain its repercussions.”

The Arab League aims to show “how the Arabs can move on the international scene to stop the aggression, support Palestine and its people, and condemn the Israeli occupation and hold it accountable for its crimes,” according to what the League’s Assistant Secretary-General, Hossam Zaki, said Thursday.

But the armed Islamic Jihad movement said on Friday that it “does not expect anything” from the meeting, criticizing Arab leaders for the delay in holding the emergency meeting.

Its Secretary-General, Muhammad al-Hindi, said in a press conference in Beirut, “We in Palestine do not place any hope on such meetings, the results of which we have known for many years.”

He continued, “When this conference is held after 35 days, this will alert us to the outcomes of this conference.” Today, Arabs have no weight in the international equation.”

Israel and its main ally, the United States, have so far rejected the ceasefire demands, a position that is expected to be the subject of severe criticism during the two summits on Saturday.

Saudi analyst Aziz Al-Ghasyan said, “This shows a diplomatic front that I believe will generate diplomatic pressure from Arab and Islamic countries.”
