In the interview published on the Mostaghel Online news site, Amjad Amini accused the authorities of having lied about the circumstances of his daughter’s death. Authorities blamed her death on a medical condition, but family and activists say she was hit in the head in custody.

Based in Tehran but originally from Saqez, Amini’s hometown in Kurdistan province, Nazila Maroufian was first arrested in November, then released, saying she was given a two-year suspended prison sentence. for five years for “propaganda against the system” and “spreading false news”. Her case echoes that of activist and journalist Sepideh Gholian, who was arrested in March hours after walking out of prison bareheaded and chanting slogans against Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
