The teenager arrested after Thursday’s stabbing of an Irish Army chaplain in Galway, western Ireland, has been charged and will appear before a judge this afternoon, police said, AFP reported.
The police said yesterday that they are also working on a terrorism investigation into the stabbing of Paul Murphy, a priest in his fifties who was seriously injured but his life is out of danger.
The teenager, whose age has not been specified, was caught by soldiers on the spot, arrested and sent to police custody, writes BTA.
“Enquiries are ongoing,” Irish police said yesterday, after yesterday indicating that one of the lines of inquiry “is to determine whether this attack was motivated by terrorism.”
According to the Irish Times newspaper, which cited police sources, the 16-year-old Irish suspect had been radicalized on the internet in recent months.
The publication also reported that the priest arrived in a car in front of the barracks on Thursday evening and rolled down the side window when he saw the attacker coming in his direction. The teenager allegedly stabbed him several times.
As the army specified in a press release, barracks officers fired five warning shots, “in strict compliance with armed forces protection protocols”, and used a baton to disarm the attacker.
Hospitalized with “serious injuries”, priest Paul Murphy thanked the public for their support in a message posted on Facebook yesterday.
