A demonstration took place in Madrid demanding general elections. As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, hundreds of people joined the rally.

The rally was held under the slogan: “For unity, dignity, law and freedom. General elections now.” The protest was organized by hundreds of associations united in the “Movement for Constitutional Spain.” Many participants in the demonstration brought with them flags of the kingdom. Those gathered also chanted slogans against Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. Representatives of opposition parties joined the rally.

Protest organizers said, among other things, “a very serious deterioration of democracy” in Spain and “buying parliamentary support [со стороны правительства] through measures that undermine equality, inter-territorial solidarity and the rule of law,” noted the newspaper Libertad Digital. In addition, the organizers of the rally recalled that Sánchez was not the winner of the last general elections and that he was able to take the post of prime minister thanks to the support of parties “whose common element is disgust and hostility towards Spanish democracy.”

General elections are scheduled in Spain for 2027. The last expression of will took place in the summer of 2023. As a result, the conservative People’s Party (PP), led by Alberto Nunez Feijoo, received the largest number of seats in parliament. Nevertheless, the PP did not receive an absolute majority of seats to independently approve its leader for the post of prime minister.

Sánchez’s Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) came in second in the elections. The PSOE was able to negotiate with other political forces to support Sánchez’s candidacy, including parties supporting Catalan independence. As a result, parliament approved the Socialist leader as head of government by a majority vote.
