“I greatly appreciate the initiative of this bill which aims to make known and valorise the territories of Magna Graecia and the treasures of history and knowledge contained therein. It is a proposal which follows up on other initiatives promoted in previous legislatures and which have remained unfortunately without follow-up. I really hope that this will be the right time.” This is the hope expressed by the editor of time.news, Pippo Marra, speaking during the hearing before the Culture commission of the Chamber of Deputies, in the Sala del Mappamondo of Palazzo Montecitorio, dedicated to the theme of the promotion of the territory of Magna Graecia .

“I don’t need to remind you that Magna Graecia is an important piece of our territory and our history – observes Marra – The proposed law lists all the places where that civilization flourished in its time; places that affect a vast extension of Southern Italy and who saw cities, activities and personalities flourish that left profound marks in the history of our country and the entire world of the time. All this heritage has never been valorised”, underlines the president of time.news.

Marra recalls that “we have always talked about Magna Graecia with a sense of sufficiency. Or sometimes with irony, as when the lawyer Agnelli defined a political leader of his time (Ciriaco De Mita; ed.) as an ‘intellectual of Magna Graecia’ … Hasty and superficial judgments, from my point of view. And I’m not just saying this as a tribute to my lands and my origins. Magna Graecia was one of the points of connection between ancient Greece, which dominated the culture of that era, and the Italian territory that began to produce in those distant times all those new institutional, artistic, cultural forms that would later cross the world. A precious civilization flourished in those parts which left a large quantity of traces in those territories. Some of which are still clearly visible today.”

Giuseppe Marra reiterates: “Enhancing all this is our duty, and it can become our convenience. There are two aspects that I would like to underline. The first concerns cultural investment. The proposal talks about strengthening documentation activities and promoting new study, information and communication activities. It is a sector to which I have dedicated a large part of my life and I remain increasingly convinced of its value and usefulness. Obviously, Magna Graecia has left behind it architectural and landscape traces of great importance. But to make this heritage known, all that communication and cultural exchange activity that always broadens horizons and brings people together will be decisive.”

The second aspect recalled by Marra concerns “collaboration between the territories involved. A myriad of municipalities and provinces and many regions which will have to get used, according to the spirit of the time, to interacting ever more closely, joining forces and overcoming the pitfalls of too much parochialism. I believe that this collaboration can be a good example of those principles of institutional harmony that our country badly needs.”

Finally, concludes the president of time.news, “I want to underline that this proposal requires an allocation of resources truly reduced to a minimum. Knowing, however, that in the countries of our times every investment, every expenditure dedicated to knowledge always tends to generate very promising economic returns and often even surprising. It is with this spirit and for all these reasons that I join those who are committed to ensuring that Magna Graecia does not remain just an ancient and somewhat neglected memory but can become a source of pride and identity for our entire nation “.
