The Attorney General’s Office announced the detention of a leader of the Al-Kani militia, on charges of excessive killing and violating the rights of some Tarhuna residents.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office said that the accused confessed to 22 murders after joining the group, and the investigator decided to detain him pending investigation.
Last June, the Attorney General’s Office announced that the Tripoli Criminal Court had issued a ruling to execute a member of the Kani militia by firing squad, for his involvement in serious violations of the rights of some residents, and for the proven charge of killing a citizen, according to the office.
The Tarhuna Victims Association expressed its satisfaction with the ruling issued against the accused, considering him one of those involved in the mass grave crimes in the city, stressing its support for the Attorney General in his efforts to arrest those involved and those who have fled.
Last May, the Libyan Council of Elders and Notables urged the competent authorities to issue arrest warrants against those involved in criminal acts and to expedite the completion of investigations with those arrested in the Tarhuna crimes.
They also demanded, in a statement following their meeting with a number of members of the Association of Families of Victims and Missing Persons of Tarhuna, that the government consider all victims of the criminal acts carried out by the Kani gang since 2012 – and describe them as martyrs.
