The Awami League is preparing to pay tribute to the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, the anniversary of his death. Joint general secretary Mahbub ul Alam Hanif confirmed to BBC Bangla that permission has been sought from the new interim government to ensure security for the event.
Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5, several senior Awami League leaders went into hiding. In light of this, BBC attempted to contact several top leaders of the party to inquire about their plans for the August 15th commemoration.
Hanif confirmed that the new government has been requested to provide security for the party’s tribute program. “A letter has been sent to the Home Affairs Advisor requesting security measures for the area,” he said. ”We hope permission will be granted.”
Earlier in a video message on his Facebook page, Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajib Wazed, requested Awami League leaders and activists to gather at 32 Dhanmondi number to pay tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the anniversary.
