The work team of the National Institution for Human Rights in Libya organized an inspection visit to the city of Kufra, during which it was briefed on the humanitarian conditions of the displaced and refugees from the sisterly Republic of Sudan.

According to the Foundation’s statement, the visit comes to determine the extent of the basic, humanitarian and health needs of the displaced and refugees, to alleviate the burden of the humanitarian crisis they are experiencing, and to evaluate the extent of the response of the Libyan authorities and the relevant international and UN organizations to the urgent humanitarian and health needs.

The team was received by the head of the Center for Illegal Immigration, Kufra Branch, officials of the Libyan Red Crescent, Kufra Branch, the spokesman for the Kufra Municipality, and the director of the Kufra Health Services Office.

During the visit, the numbers of displaced people from the Republic of Sudan were counted and registered by the Crisis Committee, as well as the most prominent medical and humanitarian needs of these displaced people and refugees.

According to the statement, the team examined the conditions of the displaced and refugees and listened to their demands, conditions and places of residence, and the process of issuing health certificates to them through the municipal health center.

The census system recorded “15,600” displaced Sudanese and refugees from January 1 to April 24, 2024.

The team confirmed that there are statistics indicating that the number has reached about 40 thousand refugees from the Republic of Sudan, 25% of whom are children under the age of 15, 15% women, 10% the elderly and infirm, and 12% patients. 2% of them returned voluntarily to Sudan.

According to the team, the most prominent humanitarian and health needs of refugees lie in providing shelter camps and medicines for chronic diseases (diabetes and high blood pressure), providing the necessary and necessary vaccinations for children, private medical clinics to provide health and medical care for the disease, and providing clothing and food and non-food aid.

During its visit, the team noted the absence of international and international organizations concerned with refugees, displaced persons, humanitarian and health affairs, due to the failure to grant them special permission to carry out their humanitarian work in Kufra.

The team called on the competent Libyan authorities, led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Civil Society Commission, to work urgently to coordinate with these international organizations and relevant UN agencies and enable them to carry out their duties and tasks of humanitarian and relief work, to alleviate the extent of the human suffering that these displaced Sudanese and refugees are going through and to alleviate the suffering. The brunt of the humanitarian crisis falls on the municipality of Kufra and the Libyan authorities, as they are essential partners of the Libyan authorities in addressing such humanitarian crises.

The Foundation’s team included Dr. Nasser Ahneesh, a member of the Board of Directors, the Director of the Foundation’s office in the southern region, “Abdul Basit Bin Najem,” and the Director of the Office of Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency and a member of the Foundation’s Fact-Finding, Monitoring and Documentation Department, “Mohammed Askar.”
