The state of South Australia has decided to put a date on the obligation to have a special driving license to be able to circulate with the ‘ultra high-powered vehicles’, supercars with the highest performance. In this way, as of December 1, 2024, the new “U-class” license will come into force, which seeks to raise awareness of the special responsibility involved in driving this type of vehicle.

The new license will be required for drivers of cars whose power-weight ratio is equal to or greater than 375 horsepower per ton, which affects some 200 models. Buses and motorcycles are exempt.

The “U-class” was established at the end of 2022 in a modification of the Motor Vehicle Regulation that has been in force since 2010, but it is now that the State government has set the implementation date for December of next year. To obtain it, the driver must have a driving license that is at least three years old and pass an online course.

The legislative review also includes new sanctions and penalties for disconnecting electronic driving assistance systems. Thus, for example, disabling systems such as ABS, AEB, ESC and traction control in these supercars can be sanctioned with fines of close to 3,000 euros. If there are victims when driving in this way, the prison sentence goes from 12 months to seven years, and 3 years of license withdrawal.
