A-list Celebrities Donate Millions to Support Hollywood Actors and Writers on Strike
Numerous A-list celebrities have stepped up to make significant financial contributions to an emergency fund that is supporting actors and writers who are currently on strike in Hollywood. According to a statement from the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, prominent figures such as Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman, and Ryan Reynolds have each donated $1 million or more to the cause.
Meryl Streep, a multiple Oscar winner, shared her personal experience and expressed her gratitude for being able to support those who will face difficulties during this extended strike action. She referred to her own past struggles working as a waiter, cleaner, typist, and even spending time on the unemployment line, stating, “We will stand strong together.”
This strike action, led by actors and writers, has caused a major disruption in the entertainment industry and is considered the largest labor action since 1960. However, there seems to be a glimmer of hope as the Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced that it will finally be meeting with Hollywood studio representatives at the bargaining table, which is seen as a step toward resolving the issues at hand.
The strike, which began in May, initially involved thousands of unionized TV and film writers who walked off their jobs due to concerns over earnings, royalty payments, worker protection, and the growing presence of artificial intelligence in the industry. The strike gained momentum in July when tens of thousands of performers in the Screen Actors Guild joined the movement, resulting in the shutdown of nearly all remaining Hollywood productions.
The SAG-AFTRA Foundation has launched its Emergency Financial Assistance Program to offer support to eligible performers facing financial crises and hardship. Foundation President Courtney B. Vance expressed his admiration for the generosity of Clooney and Streep, who have played a pivotal role in inspiring others to contribute. The foundation has already raised over $15 million in the past three weeks and is currently processing an unprecedented number of applications for emergency aid.
The donations from some of Hollywood’s highest-earning stars are providing much-needed relief to those experiencing significant economic distress due to the strike. The funds raised will assist in covering living expenses such as rent, mortgage payments, groceries, utilities, and medical costs.
This strike has already led to the shutdown of popular late-night talk shows, the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” and an HBO “Game of Thrones” spinoff titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.”
Courtney B. Vance emphasized the urgent need to address the crisis within the entertainment industry, likening it to the challenges faced during the coronavirus pandemic. He acknowledged the devastating impact of theater and cinema closures on the performing arts community, and stressed the vital role that the foundation plays as a supportive safety net for actors.
In addition to the contributions made by Meryl Streep and George Clooney, Dwayne Johnson, popularly known as “the Rock,” made a historic seven-figure donation, which is the largest single donation ever received by the foundation.
Vance called upon other celebrities to remember their own struggles and to support fellow performers, concluding by saying, “We still aren’t done.” The ongoing support of celebrities and the public at large will be instrumental in helping the industry weather this challenging period and emerge stronger.
