Chennai: The low pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal has strengthened today and is approaching the shores of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Balachandran, Head of the South Zone of the Indian Meteorological Survey said:

A low pressure area is forming over the adjoining areas of the South West Bay of Bengal.

It may strengthen today or tomorrow and move towards Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast as a deep depression. Due to this, heavy rain is likely to occur in the coastal districts for the next three days.

Moderate rain is likely to occur in 14 districts including Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai and Tuticorin today. A ‘yellow alert’ has been issued for this. 17 districts including Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain tomorrow. An ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for these districts

Moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely in nine districts including Madurai, Dindigul and Theni.

A ‘yellow alert’ has been issued for this. Fishermen should not go to the sea as cyclones will blow in the coastal areas of Kumarikadal, Gulf of Mannar, Tamil Nadu. This is what he said.
