A magnitude 6 earthquake shook the waters of the Moluccas Sea, in the northeastern region of Indonesia, this Friday, without authorities reporting any damage or activating a tsunami warning.

The United States Geological Survey, which records seismic activity around the world, indicated that the earthquake occurred at 11:48 local time (3:48 GMT) and located the hypocenter at a depth of 115 kilometers.

The towns closest to the earthquake are Tobelo, on the island of Halmahera and inhabited by about 34,000 people, located 95 kilometers east of the epicenter, and Ternate, with more than 212,000 residents, which is located about 108 kilometers to the southeast.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of ​​great seismic and volcanic activity in which about 7,000 earthquakes are recorded every year, most of them moderate.
