The Clara-Haskil international piano competition cultivates its difference. Elsewhere, the virtuosos, here, the musicians. The rules are clear. It’s about discovering an artist endowed with “sensitivity, [d’]humility, [capable de] questioning and [de] perpetual search for excellence”. Qualities carried high by the Romanian pianist Clara Haskil, Jewish, refugee in Vevey, Switzerland, in 1942, and died in Brussels in 1960. The list of former winners speaks for itself: Christoph Eschenbach, Evgeni Koroliov, Richard Goode , Till Fellner, Martin Helmchen, Adam Laloum, Cristian Budu, Mao Fujita… It’s not flashy. The jury was rarely wrong (Michel Dalberto, for humility, perhaps) and only crowned original personalities.
