An investigation has been opened after a 26-year-old man was killed by a police officer on Thursday. The member of the police fired at him during his arrest in Baie-Mahault, Guadeloupe, said the Pointe-à-Pitre prosecution. Wanted for theft, concealment in an organized gang, aggravated extortion and kidnapping, he was hit by at least one shot from a police officer. A police officer was also “slightly injured” during this intervention, carried out by Raid personnel and the judicial police of Guadeloupe.

The facts occurred “while he was trying, despite the warnings given to him, to flee at the wheel of a vehicle by endangering several police officers”, specifies a press release from Patrick Desjardins, prosecutor of the Republic of Pointe-à-Pitre.

An investigation by the IGPN in progress

An investigation for “intentional violence resulting in death without intention to give it” was entrusted to the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN). “It will aim to determine precisely the circumstances of the death” during this intervention, according to the same source. These facts occur in a context of increasing violence and arms trafficking in the archipelago.

“It is our Guadeloupean youth who are killing each other before our eyes, certainly often around traffic, but sometimes for much more futile reasons such as the theft of a gold chain or a scooter”, lamented, Thursday, in a press release the local federation of the Socialist Party. She called for “collective awareness, general mobilization and means finally up to the challenges”.
