Did he want to have his moment of glory in the next season of The Crown ? London police said they had arrested a 25-year-old man who was breaking into the royal stables on the grounds of Buckingham Palace. At 1:25 a.m., on the night of Friday to Saturday, “agents at Buckingham Palace intervened with an individual who was climbing the wall to enter the royal stables,” Scotland Yard said in a statement.

The individual was arrested for “trespassing on a protected site” and placed in police custody at a London police station, where he remains. But the man did not “at any time enter Buckingham Palace or the palace gardens”, police said.

Significant intrusions

Despite the reinforced security around the site, intrusion attempts at Buckingham Palace, a royal residence in the heart of London, as at Windsor Castle, are not exceptional. The most spectacular dates back to 1982, in Buckingham, when a thirty-year-old, Michael Fagan, managed to make his way into the bedroom of the queen who was in bed (and featured in season 4 of The Crown).

In 2021, a man suffering from mental health problems was seen climbing the stable grounds, then walking back towards the street shortly after. He was quickly arrested with cocaine and a kitchen knife on him.

And a man, Jaswant Singh Chail, is currently on trial in London for entering Windsor Castle on Christmas Day 2021 armed with a crossbow with the intention of “killing the queen”, he said at the time of his arrest. The queen, who died last year at the age of 96, was then in the castle where she was spending the end-of-year holidays.

Prosecuted under the “Treason Act”, the law on treason, used in an extremely rare manner, he pleaded guilty, which means that a trial is not necessary, and a judge must soon decide on his sentence.
