A man was shot dead in Petare, Miranda state, after resisting a robbery when he was returning from visiting his 7-year-old son on the night of Saturday, April 15.

The man, identified as 33-year-old Yinber Alexander Martínez, lived in Santa Teresa del Tuy, Miranda, but was visiting the San Blas neighborhood in Petare. When he was back, he was approached by some subjects who caused him gunshot wounds. The victim died on the spot.

The mother of Martínez’s son, whose identity is unknown, contacted her relatives about what happened. The authorities handle robbery as the main motive for the crime, although they do not rule out any other hypothesis, according to the journalist Lysaura Fuentes on Twitter on Tuesday, April 18.

The victim worked as an assistant at a bakery in Santa Teresa del Tuy. She had only been in the country for two months, after having returned from Barranquilla, Colombia, where she lived for four years.

Second violent death in Petare in the last month

This is the second case of violent death registered in Petare in the last month. On March 19, a man died in the José Félix Ribas neighborhood of Petare after receiving several shots from a firearm.

The victim was identified as José Ávila, 28 years old, and was a resident of the La Bombilla neighborhood, also in Petare. The reason why he was in the José Félix Ribas neighborhood is unknown.

As reported by the journalist Lysaura Fuentes On March 21, the victim’s relatives went to the National Service of Medicine and Forensic Science (Senamecf) in Bello Monte to identify the body and carry out the funeral procedures.

The authorities in charge of the investigation do not rule out that the crime is linked to the gang known as Wilexis, one of the criminal organizations that operate in Petare.

Murders represent 41% of crimes in Caracas in the first two months of 2023

The Venezuelan Violence Observatory (OVV) recorded 71 criminal events in the Caracas Metropolitan Area (AMC) between January and February 2023. Of this number, 41% are homicides, 23% robberies and 17% assaults.

Likewise, the OVV reported 8% of cases of attempted homicide, 4% of kidnappings, 3% of rapes, 3% of coercion, while threats of death or assault represented 1%, it stated in its report published on March 16.

67% of the crimes occurred in the Libertador municipality and 22% in the Sucre municipality, which makes them the most violent in the capital region. While 15% of the events took place in Petare, 10% in the Sucre parish, 8% in El Valle and 7% in San Bernardino.
