The Umayyad Mosque in the Syrian capital, Damascus, witnessed complete chaos due to a “food campaign” set up by Chef Abu Omar, who is famous on social media platforms.
According to video clips circulated on social media, the event, which was attended by a large number of individuals, caused cases of suffocation, while there were reports of a death, forcing security forces to fire into the air to disperse the gatherings.
Chef Abu Omar had posted video clips on his YouTube and Instagram accounts documenting the process of preparing for the feast at the Umayyad Mosque.
The Governor of Damascus, Maher Marwan, confirmed that the unfortunate incident that occurred in the Great Umayyad Mosque was the result of a stampede during one of the civil activities held in the mosque and its surroundings, which resulted in the death of three people and the injury of a number of others. He added, “We are following up with the Ministry of Interior on the course of the investigation to find out the details.” The accident and its causes, and we will take all necessary measures to hold those responsible for its occurrence accountable.” He said: “We bear full responsibility for what happened at the Umayyad Mosque, and we are working to take urgent measures to ensure that such incidents do not occur again in public places in the future.” We extend our sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, and wish a speedy recovery to all those injured, and we affirm that this incident will not pass without accountability.
