There is no staff for toilet cleaning and sanitation in government schools. The headmasters of the Panchayat Union schools are allowed to appoint staff to carry out such work. They are given a salary of Rs 1,000 per month for the Panchayat Union primary schools, and Rs 300 to buy materials such as beneoil, bleaching powder, brooms, and Rs 1,300. For middle schools, Rs 1,000 is given for salary and Rs 500 for purchase of essentials, including Rs 1,500.

Trouble engaging the student

Some of the teachers said: No one comes forward to work for the meager salary provided by the government; They clean the toilet only once in 2-3 days. As the meager salary provided by the government is not enough for them, the teachers have to spend their own money and undertake sanitation work including cleaning toilets. In higher secondary and higher secondary schools, cleaning staff are appointed through the parent teacher association, paying a salary of up to 5,000 rupees per month. Due to unavailability of staff, some schools are struggling to engage students in such work. In government schools, employees should be appointed to carry out cleaning work, at least on a fixed salary basis, they said.

Will the government allocate funds?

Manokaran, a former executive of the Graduate Teachers’ Association, said, “A few years ago, the government gave a verbal order to use the employees of the local bodies to clean the toilets in the schools; But, it didn’t work. Cleaning and cleaning of toilets in government schools can also be given to private parties on contract basis, just like privatizing and contracting sanitation in local bodies. For this, funds should be allocated on behalf of the government,” he said.
