The driving force behind socio-economic development in Benin, agriculture will be entirely mechanized within the next decade. This is what President Patrice Talon announced in his speech on the state of the nation on Thursday, December 21, 2023. According to the Head of State, it is the sector which is paying a heavy price in the face of the crises which shake up the world. Because the conflicts and wars that are observed here and there lead to the scarcity of inputs and, consequently, their high cost. Under these conditions, even if the government has made real efforts to make inputs available to producers at subsidized prices, a slowdown in the production boom has been observed. But, aware that this sector is the engine of socio-economic development, the government is strengthening its support. “This results in particular in the provision of agricultural machines and equipment at subsidized prices of up to 50%, which means that a machine worth 1,000,000 FCFA is sold for less than 500,000 FCFA, another for 15,000 .000 FCFA is sold for barely 8,000,000 FCFA,” said Patrice Talon. Thanks to this policy, the President of the Republic observes a rate of penetration of agricultural machines which increases significantly and increasingly facilitates production. “Our objective is that by the next decade, Beninese agriculture will be entirely mechanized and, above all, that productivity will continually improve to guarantee food security but also increasingly enrich our producers and reduce the arduousness of the work. . The national agricultural mechanization company and the National Agricultural Development Fund will, in the future, be even more present alongside our producers. To do this, we have facilitated the mechanism for benefiting from their services. We want this agriculture to be even more diversified, with the emergence of new sectors,” he made clear. As a result, emphasis will be placed on massive production of cassava to supply the national industry. This will also be the case for peanuts with a view to their on-site processing in Benin into edible oil to supplement the national supply of quality oil, in order to replace imports whose quality is often not up to par. norms and standards required for population health.
