A new drug causes obese patients to lose a fifth of their body weight

by time news

The diabetes drug Tirzepatide has achieved life-changing results for obese people.

The American company Eli Lilly produces the drug, which mimics the hormones that lead people to feel full after eating.

The British Telegraph newspaper said the British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved the use of a diabetes drug to help obese people lose weight.

Scientists said that injecting a patient with it once a week would produce an effect that exceeds anything else available now, while a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine this year said that patients who received the highest possible dose of the drug lost an average of a fifth of their body weight.

Just as the drug helps people feel full, it controls diabetes, by removing excess sugar from the body and preventing the liver from excreting too much of it.

It is estimated that about 85% of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese, while losing weight helps control diabetes.

Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to blindness, amputations, and comas.
