In Brazil, two girls died after contracting Oropouche fever, the country’s Ministry of Health reported. As reported by Day.Az with reference to AFP, these are the first registered victims of the disease.

The Health Ministry specified that the girls were under 30 years old. Their illness proceeded with “symptoms similar to a severe form of dengue fever,” the department added. Dengue fever is an acute viral disease that proceeds with intoxication, rash, enlarged lymph nodes and high temperature.

Since the beginning of 2024, more than 7,000 cases of Oropouche fever have been registered in Brazil, the Ministry of Health notes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported the first cases of Oropouche virus in French Guiana in October 2020. In early June 2024, the virus was detected in nine provinces of Cuba.

Oropouche fever is an infection that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The disease usually develops without complications, with the condition improving on the third or fourth day, but in severe cases life-threatening complications may occur, notes the WHO.
