The Women’s Champions League will change its format from the 2025-2026 season.
UEFA on Monday unveiled a new formula for the Women’s Champions League from the 2025-26 season and announced the creation of another club competition. The new version of the Champions League, the concept of which was approved on Saturday by the executive committee of the European body, will take place in the form of a single group with 18 clubs – instead of the 16 clubs currently divided into four groups -, modeled on the format which will come into force for the men’s Champions League from 2024-25. Each team will play, as is currently the case in the group stage, a total of six matches, three at home and three away, but against six different opponents, and no longer three. The first four will directly qualify for the quarter-finals. The eight teams ranked from 5th to 12th place will compete in a round-trip play-off to try to join them.
“This change in format means that, without increasing the number of matches at this stage, the best teams will play each other more often and earlier, and that all teams will have more competitive matches and a wide variety of opponents», Indicated UEFA in a press release. The European Confederation will also organize a second women’s club competition for the first time “in a knockout format”. “This means that even more teams will be able to compete against European opponents and that certain teams eliminated in the first rounds of the Women’s Champions League will have a second chance to play in a continental competition”indicated UEFA. “These two competitions were developed with the aim of increasing competitiveness and maximizing participation while taking into account scheduling constraints and player workload. Qualification for both competitions will remain open and obtained through the performance of a team in its national championship.also specified the authority.
