One of the famous black cocked hats worn by the emperor was auctioned on November 19 in Fontainebleau. It exceeds the 2014 record at 1.884 million euros for another hat also sold by Osenat to a South Korean businessman.

A hat of Emperor Napoleon I, the famous black bicorne with its blue, white and red cockade, was sold at auction this Sunday, November 19, in Fontainebleau by the Osenat house. It was acquired for 1.932 million euros with fees in the room against telephones by an emissary acting on behalf of an Italian collector, whose identity did not want to be revealed. But in the opinion of specialists, who do not believe in this Italian pseudo-collector and according to the rumors that circulated in the room, it could well be that this cocked hat was bought by the entourage of the late Jean-Louis Noisiez. The emissary, obviously a sales novice, was surrounded by a “team” welcoming the acquisition.

This hat worn by Napoleonaround the middle of the Empire», according to a Belgian author who listed them in 2007, Yves Moerman, came from the collection of this founder of the cleaning and other business services group GSF, who died in 2022. This is a new record for this bicorne which exceeds that of sold for 1.884 million euros in 2014, acquired by a South Korean businessman who exhibited it in the hall of his company in Seoul.

The cocked hat was made by Pierre-Quentin-Joseph Baillon, the Emperor’s quartermaster from 1806. According to experts, Napoleon added his cockade to it while he was in the Mediterranean, returning from the island of Elba, on March 1, 1815. The Ridley Scott effect certainly played a role. The bicorne, the emperor’s most legendary relic, still fascinates collectors.
