Fraudsters have come up with a simpler and cheaper scheme to steal money from the accounts of Russians, involving the use of social engineering methods. RIA Novosti was told about this by the head of the ONF project “For the rights of borrowers” Evgenia Lazareva.

Attackers send victims SMS or e-mail warnings about possible withdrawals from the card or problems with a bank account. In some cases, citizens are trying to convince them that they are entitled to payments or an increase in benefits.

According to the expert, the main “subtle psychological moment” of this scheme is that the victim must call the operator herself in order to understand the situation. As practice shows, citizens trust more those whom they call themselves.

“If the victim decides to contact the fraudster himself, she is sure that the instructions given by the operator will help solve the problem, get rid of unnecessary expensive subscriptions, return money, increase the amount of monthly payments and benefits,” Lazareva explained.

She noted that it is impossible to completely protect people from this fraud scheme, however, the number of victims could be reduced by reconfiguring the operation of their spam filters by mail services.
