The Pact for the Future was adopted with applause this morning at the Future Summit by all UN Member States. The Bulgarian delegation is led by acting Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev.

The Russian delegation at the forum submitted a proposal for amendments to the text of the pact, but after a vote it was rejected.

With 143 votes in favour, 7 votes against (Belarus, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Iran, Nicaragua, Russian Federation, Sudan and Syria) and 15 abstentions

The Pact for the Future has two annexes: a Global Compact on Digital Technologies and a Declaration for Future Generations.

Earlier, Senegal’s Philemon Yang, president of this year’s UN General Assembly, kicked off the Future Summit at the world body’s headquarters in New York. He spoke from the rostrum of the United Nations, with Secretary General Antonio Guterres next to him.

The Pact for the Future, as well as its annexes, are the result of many months of negotiations and compromises by all parties, Philemon Yang said. There is no international document that is perfect, but I strongly believe that the Pact for the Future expresses the broadest support of member states, he added.

“The future is in our hands, we have the power to make important choices for global transformation,” he stressed.

The Future Summit aims to address the challenges and gaps in global governance and revitalize the multilateral system with the United Nations at its core.
