The team of the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater performed with great success at the XXVI International Festival of Russian Theaters “Meetings in Russia”, which this year is dedicated to the 225th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. As Day.Az reports, the press service of the theater told Trend about this.

The festival takes place in the theater-festival “Baltic House” in St. Petersburg (Russia), with the participation of groups from Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other countries.

The international festival is held under the motto “Pushkin forever”, and therefore most of the performances shown at it are dedicated to the Russian poet and are based on his prose, poetry, and literature.

The festival was opened by the team of the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater with the play “The Captain’s Daughter” directed by St. Petersburg director Igor Konyaev.

The performance was staged within the framework of the international project “St. Petersburg Theater Workshops” jointly by the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg, the Association of Russian Theater Workers Abroad and the Theater-Festival “Baltic House”. The premiere of the play in Baku took place in June 2023.

“The Captain’s Daughter” is a historical story by Alexander Pushkin, the action of which takes place during the uprising of Emelyan Pugachev during the reign of Catherine II. The theme of honor and duty runs like a red line through the work.

The performance of the play at the opening of the festival aroused great public interest; the performance of Azerbaijani actors was greeted with thunderous applause and received many positive reviews.

It should be noted that before the opening of the festival, a press conference was held, in which the head of the festival, general director of the Baltic House Theater-Festival Sergei Shub, director of the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater, Honored Worker of Culture of Azerbaijan Adalet Hajiyev, as well as heads of other theaters participating in the festival.

During the press conference, Adalet Hajiyev mentioned that Azerbaijani actors worked with Igor Konyaev with great pleasure.

“The play “The Captain’s Daughter” brings together full houses in our theater,” emphasized Adalet Gadzhiev.

“Meetings in Russia” is a large-scale annual festival that brings together Russian-language theaters from different countries. In 2024 it runs until April 9.
