Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on the 20th that since May, objects presumed to be cargo have been repeatedly observed piling up and disappearing in front of the Dandong Customs Office in China.

RFA reported that a red object was seen piled up in front of the Dandong Customs Office in China, citing satellite photos taken on the 15th by Planet Labs, a commercial satellite in the United States.

The object is believed to be cargo or a container being stored for customs procedures, and was not present the previous day, the 14th.

The movement of cargo piling up and then disappearing in front of Dandong Customs began in earnest in mid-May. On May 13, an object presumed to be cargo was piled up in front of Dandong Customs and disappeared a few days later. On the 30th of last month, there was nothing in front of the customs office, but an object presumed to be cargo was loaded on the 3rd. On the 14th, everything disappeared again, and on the following day, the 15th, a red object was identified.

RFA cited satellite photos taken of Uiju Airport on the 28th of last month, reporting that stacks of blue, white, and red cargo were also identified. Cargo and containers that entered North Korea through Dandong are stored at Uiju Airport for quarantine purposes.

Park Jong-soo, former chairman of the Northern Economic Cooperation Committee under the direct control of the president, analyzed to RFA that the close relationship between North Korea and Russia is also affecting North Korea-China trade, saying, “As exchanges between Russia and North Korea are becoming more active in all areas, China cannot refuse what North Korea is demanding.”

Choi Jang-ho, head of the unification and international cooperation team at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, told RFA that the reason for this phenomenon since May is the “20X10 policy for local development.” He mentioned the possibility that the items entering North Korea are “building materials,” and speculated that “it is likely because they started importing mainly raw materials related to industrial production starting in May.”
