A plane crash in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo claimed the lives of all 62 people on board, local authorities reported. CNN Brasil confirmed the tragedy. The airline operating the ATR-72, Voepass Linhas Aéreas, has not issued any official statement. Emergency responders, firefighters, and police rushed to the scene of the crash.
The ATR-72, carrying 58 passengers and four crew members, crashed in a residential area of the city of Vinhedo in the state of São Paulo. Initial reports suggest the plane collided with houses, but no injuries on the ground have been confirmed.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva indirectly confirmed the deaths, urging a moment of silence at a public event in remembrance of the victims. “It appears that everyone has died, so I am asking for a minute’s silence for the victims,” the president stated.
FlightRadar24 data shows the aircraft crashed approximately an hour and a half into its flight. The ATR-72, manufactured in Europe, has a capacity of up to 70 passengers and is commonly used for regional routes.
