A plea for the stove: heating with wood

by time news

Dhe like-minded people in the forest are never at a loss for a snappy remark. Making wood makes you feel warm three times over – first you have to laboriously fetch it from the forest, then it is sweatingly crushed, and in the end it burns comfortably. Even the choice of words is weird, because you don’t make wood, it grows by itself. At best, we accept this for logs. And the community of those who make their own firewood has common interests, but the self-promoters, as the forester calls them, are often not friendly to each other, the competition for the coveted product is too great. So one observes with suspicion what the competitor is doing.

But first things first. We are familiar with all objections as to why heating with wood is bad. The smoke rising in the nose is a beguiling scent for the campfire romantic, for everyone else it stinks. Although that doesn’t have to be the case, we’ll get to that later. As with any combustion, with the exception of hydrogen, a cocktail of more or less toxic chemical compounds is produced. In the spring, fine dust was once again a topic of discussion, because the head of the Federal Environment Agency prefers to do politics himself instead of advising politicians, which would be the job of an official. The pollutants are naturally the same as those that occur in forest fires, which are a completely natural process, but have reached alarming proportions in many places, partly due to mistakes in forestry.
