In Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, lived Don Celestino González, poet of the last century. His specialty was at first delivering funeral eulogies in tear-jerking verses, but then he diversified his muse. On the occasion of the appearance of a comet he gave birth to the following epiphoneme:

This comet that came
along with the golden age
what did he come for? I ignore it
and what will be their destiny.
The alarmed people are:
ask if he brings disease
like the other time he came.
I am in a mess
because I want to know:
Where did this flea come from?
Where did this flea come from?

In 1882 the railway reached Lagos. Wasn’t Don Celestino going to sing such a great event?

The bird that is subtle
on his wings he stands.
As she comes and goes
I come and go on the railway.
Juárez wants to go up to glory
and ask for your consolation
if you can go to heaven
sitting on the railway
Juárez sends San Pedro to say
who has already prepared a lodging for him,
that it is no longer made gourd,
to come and see the railway.

People began to get tired of Don Celestino’s verses and his long speeches. The disaster came on September 16. The poet went up to the rostrum −out of the program, as always− and began to improvise a long rhymed lyrical stretch. He had been talking for almost an hour when his voice broke. So he said:

My voice is no longer understood.
My throat has dried up.
Why didn’t a glass of water bring me closer
on this September 16?

Then a trumpet of mockery was heard. It would never have sounded! Don Celestino was inflamed with holy indignation and proceeded to finish off his speech with some verses that perhaps by chance came out – it was the first time – well measured and well rhymed:

And the one to whom it does not fit
my patriotic eloquence
go fuck your mother
and long live Independence!
