Incidents erupted between residents of several districts of Nanterre and the police on Tuesday, June 27 at the end of the day and throughout the night, a few hours after the death of Naël M., shot at close range by a motorcycle policeman from the public order and traffic department of the Paris police headquarters when he refused to comply.
Pallet fires, burning of building sites and vehicles in the Vieux-Pont district where the victim was from, arrests of twenty people: the calls for calm from the mayor of the city, Patrick Jarry, will therefore not have been enough to avoid foreseeable overflows given the circumstances of the death of the young man, captured by the smartphone of a passer-by around 8:15 am, Tuesday morning, in the district of the Hauts-de-Seine prefecture.
The 50-second sequence, which has gone viral on social networks, literally swept away the elements of language first distilled by the authorities, which evoked a vehicle rushing towards two officers with the intention of hitting them. The footage shows the two police bikers leaning out of the driver’s side door of a yellow Mercedes AMG. On the soundtrack, covered by the hubbub of traffic, it is possible to hear snippets of a lively conversation. “You’re going to take a shot in the head”, shouts a policeman in particular, his handgun pointed a few centimeters from the driver of the vehicle.

The car is barely restarting, it is still rolling when a shot rings out. Hit in the region of the heart, the victim lost control of his vehicle, which hit a sign in Nelson-Mandela Square, about fifty meters away. The young man died several tens of minutes later despite an attempt at resuscitation by the SAMU. A passenger, also a minor, was apprehended while a third individual, on the run, was still actively sought on Tuesday night.
Seized of the facts, the Nanterre public prosecutor’s office opened two investigations: the first for refusal to comply and attempted homicide against the police; the second, for intentional homicide, targets the police officer who used his weapon. They were entrusted to the Nanterre police station, a decision by the city prosecutor’s office which raises suspicions about the impartiality of the conduct of the investigations, believe the three lawyers for the victim’s family.
