“Occupying a political position, such as that of Prime Minister is undoubtedly, is incompatible with the functions I exercise as deputy ombudsman”, commented Elena Cherneva-Markova, who resigned as deputy ombudsman shortly before the president’s consultations for an official Prime Minister

“On the occasion of the numerous publications about my resignation as deputy ombudsman, I want to state that, in my deep conviction, the ombudsman of the Republic of Bulgaria and his deputy are non-politicized persons who protect the rights and freedoms of all Bulgarian citizens”, she also commented .

Initially, Cherneva-Markova denied that there was a connection between the ombudsman’s departure from the institution and the possibility of being nominated as interim prime minister, Nova TV reported.

The deputy ombudsman is one of the options for caretaker prime minister if a government is formed by the president. According to the latest changes to the Constitution, the head of state can only choose between several options for acting prime minister – the Speaker of the National Assembly Rosen Zhelyazkov, the Governor of the BNB Dimitar Radev and Deputy Governors Andrey Gyurov and Petar Chobanov, the Chairman of the Audit Chamber Dimitar Glavchev or Deputy- chairpersons Gorica Grancharova-Kozhareva and Toshko Todorov, ombudsman Diana Kovacheva or her deputy.
