A powerful earthquake off the coast of Taiwan on Wednesday caused some buildings on the island to tilt and others to collapse.

As Day.Az reports with reference to Interfax, Chinese media reported this.

According to the Taiwan Emergency Management Center, at least 26 buildings on the island collapsed as a result of the tremors, the occupants of seven of them were trapped, and more than 90 thousand households on the island were left without power supply.

The army has been involved in eliminating the consequences of the earthquake. The head of the Taiwanese administration, Tsai Ing-wen, said that she had instructed to look into the situation and assess the consequences as soon as possible, as well as provide the necessary assistance to local authorities.

Beijing offered assistance in eliminating the consequences, said Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the Office of Taiwan Affairs under the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.

“Relevant parties on the mainland are extremely concerned and express their sincere condolences to the Taiwanese compatriots affected by the natural disaster,” she said.

Zhu Fenglian added that the PRC “pays close attention to the situation with the natural disaster and is ready to provide assistance in eliminating the consequences.”

So far there have been no reports of possible casualties or injuries.
