A well-known pastor in the United States expressed his support for the candidacy of Kamala Harris and was widely criticized by other Christians, which led to him deleting the post on social media.

Ray Ortlund, leader of Immanuel Church in Nashville, Tennessee, deleted a social media post endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president after receiving backlash on Sunday, September 29.

The controversial post said “Trump never came. Harris sometimes. Jesus always.” The declaration of voting for the candidate of the Republican Party, which favors policies that promote abortion and gender ideology, among other extremist banners of the left, raised questions.

“How can you vote for Harris/Walz as a believer? Do you think Jesus would support killing children?” asked one of the pastor’s followers, who told him: “Leave your personal opinions about the person aside and vote for the party that will support your morals and religious beliefs. I believe that any party involved in the murder of God’s children should be immediately expelled.

The priest tried to amend his statement by saying that “abortion is a terrible evil”, but he was choosing Kamala because of his subjective belief that Trump is a greater evil: “The evils on the other side have increased to levels that risk endangers. the basic rule of law in our country. I am thinking long term and voting for national renewal in the future.”

Demagogy

The barrage of criticism was intense, with comments from other big names in North American Christian circles: “[Se o pastor] really worried about not jeopardizing the rule of law in America, you have to ask yourself where he has been for the last four years”, said the vice president of the Discovery Institute, John G. West.

“Politically motivated laws against election opponents, government-induced censorship of dissenting voices on social media, lawsuits against peaceful pro-life protesters, ordinances that have no basis in laws passed by Congress, refusal to enforce existing laws,” West listed.

“This is just a small list of what is happening. But Ortlund assures us that in order to protect the rule of law we must vote for the same people who are responsible for these things. His comments about the bubble in which some important evangelicals live are noteworthy”, he criticized.

Christian musician Samuel Sey wrote: “If Ray Ortlund truly believed that abortion was a terrible evil, he would not have voted for Kamala Harris. This is disgraceful.”

Former Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of North Carolina, Allen Mashburn, warned Pastor Ortlund that he who chooses “this time for Harris” does not “always choose Jesus”.

“These two statements are diametrically opposed and not biblically coherent,” Masburn said.

Another evangelical leader who criticized the pastor was William Wolfe, who serves as executive director of the Baptist Leadership Center, saying that Ortlund bowed to the prevailing culture: “Remember, this is the father of Gavin Ortlund and pastor Russell Moore. He is the shepherd of ‘Oíche Mór’ par excellence. And now he’s using the name of Christ to support abortion, pro-trans-communism.”

The term “Great Eva” was coined to describe “the network of major evangelical organizations and conferences that seek to shape the thinking and strategy of American evangelical churches.” Pastor Russell Moore, mentioned by Wolfe, is the editor of the magazine Christianity Todaya openly against Donald Trump.

Retreat

Pastor Ortlund deleted his post on Threads (on Instagram) and justified himself: “I deleted a post earlier today because it was being misunderstood. I should have seen it coming. My fault.”

After the pastor deleted his post, Wolfe pushed back at the criticism: “Now Ray Ortlund is pushing back, claiming his post was ‘misrepresented’. It’s clear: he’s voting for Harris ‘this time.’ A penetrating and suspenseful classical speech.”

Another user on the social network questioned why the pastor deleted the post, and ignored the conversation, according to the The Christian Post: “I am very sorry. But answering your question could jeopardize my exclusion decision.”
