The professor from the University of Barcelona pillar bayer is one of the people who have been distinguished by the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME) with its medals of 2022, which recognize the special contributions of relevant figures.
The Royal Society of Mathematics has also distinguished the rector of the Menéndez Pelayo International University, Carlos Andradasand to the professor Luis Narvaez from the University of Seville.
The winners “treasure a solid track record in the field of research, management and teaching in mathematics“, highlighted the RSME in a statement.

A precursor in Spanish mathematics
Bayer, retired professor and professor emeritus in the Department of Algebra and Geometry at the University of Barcelona“has made a crucial contribution to the development of Number Theory in Spanish Mathematicsa field in which he has created a school that, today, is a world leader in its field”.
The jury has highlighted his beginnings in mathematics “at a time when it was not easy for women to start a scientific career”, in fact she was the only one in her class. In 1975, became the second woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics by the University of Barcelona.

The RSME and the BBVA Foundation have also recognized today the work of six young researchers in mathematics for his advances in fields such as quantum computing, materials science, fluid mechanics, or image processing.
The six have been awarded in the VIII edition of the Vicent Caselles Awards, awards that the RSME and the BBVA Foundation grant each year to scientists under 30 years of age -Spanish or foreign- who have carried out their research in Spain.
