The University of Vigo leads a project that identifies key areas in the prevention of large forest fires in the border areas between Spain and PortugalAs explained by the university, a study by the School of Forestry Engineering indicates that of the nearly thirty thousand fires that have been recorded in the Galician mountains between 2011 and 2021, 66 (0.2%) were those that They caused almost half of the hectares burned.

He Firepoctep+ project, in which 17 institutions and entities from Spain and Portugal participate until 2026 and which has a budget of 3.3 million euros, is co-financed by the European Union. One of its axes will be the location, along the border, of strategic management zones that are determining factors in the behavior of these extreme fires and in which preventive action would reduce their effects.

One of the lines of previous work was the methodological development for the identification of strategic management zones, which in this new project will try to locate in the different pilot areas that have been established along the border. Another objective is to contribute to the mobilization of endogenous resources with preventive value to consolidate a productive firewall networksuch as with the presence of livestock or the commitment to certain types of crops.

The project has the participation of the General Directorate of Defense of Monte de la Xunta, Feuga and Energylab, which also includes the universities of Extremadura, Huelva, Córdoba and Vóra; the Andalusian Environment and Water Agency; the Provincial Council of Vila; the inter-municipal communities of the Combra, Alto Minho and Algarve Region; the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission; the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority of Portugal; the Junta de Andaluca, and the Finnova Foundation.
