- The man is about 60 years old, bottles of alcohol were found near his bike
- The municipality’s hands are tied, the site belongs to the waterworks, says the mayor of the “Yuzhen” region
- Excavated for over 2 years, I warned that until someone falls, they will not secure the excavations, says a woman who lives nearby
A 60-year-old cyclist from Plovdiv died ridiculously in a shaft on Alexander Stamboliyski Blvd. on Independence Day. The segment is
under repair for a long time, the southern bypass collector is being laid along it
However, asphalt has already been laid in this exact section and pedestrians and cyclists often pass by there.
The report was made around 3:40 p.m. on Sunday.
The citizen who called suggested that the bicyclist had fallen into the waste facility. Meters from the place is the security booth of the Medical College. However, there were no people in it because of the holiday. There are no residential buildings around, the nearest block is more than 200 meters away.
No signs of violence were found on the body, which indicates an accident. That’s why the prosecutor’s office initiated pre-trial proceedings for death caused by negligence. Investigators will look into why the shaft was not secured and who is responsible.
According to “24 Chasa”, bottles of alcohol were found around the dead man’s bicycle. He had probably been treated and fallen into the shaft the night before. But because of the holiday and the deserted area, the body was not noticed until Sunday afternoon. The results of the autopsy are not ready, they will show whether the deceased was under the influence of alcohol.
“Exactly at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, I passed by and saw only one bicycle. I didn’t see a person, but he was obviously in the shaft,” a woman who sells flowers at the nearby funeral park in the Kyuchuk Paris quarter explained to “24 Chasa” . She later learned that a man had died in it.
“It has been excavated for over 2 years, anyone can pass and
to beat up
Nothing is progressing on the repair. That’s how the trenches are. They put the big pipes through, but the holes are still open. Every two weeks, workers are measured and they work for one or two days. Hopefully after 5 years they will do it, but until then there is a danger that others will also suffer”, adds the woman.
After the news of the tragic incident spread, residents of “Kyuchuk Paris” bristled. They blame both the contractor of the project – ViK-Plovdiv, and the local authority for the slow pace and the excavated area.
“I live nearby. Just the other day, I was telling my husband that until someone falls into these trenches, they will not be safe. It’s a pity for the person,” commented Donika Boteva.
According to Angel Yotov, a resident of the area, the shafts are not secured. He gives the example of a branch with a bag tied to it and stuck in a recently filled hole. “This is their signaling – a complete tragedy,” resents Yotov.
“The municipality should take responsibility.
What are these endless repairs – broken streets, construction sites, traffic jams, dirt
We live like cavemen,” Antoineta Nedeleva was also angry.
The mayor of the “South” district, Atanas Kunchev, on whose territory the incident took place, explains that the municipality’s hands are tied for this object.
“The contracting authority is VK-Plovdiv. They chose the contractor company, they also chose the supervision company that is responsible for the quality. We are not a party to this contract, we are only picking negatives from the slow pace and method of construction of this collector,” he says Kunchev.
Eng. Tihomir Krastev, a representative of the construction company, is categorical that the shaft was fenced with fence panels and accumulated building materials.
“Before the holidays, the opening was secured,
but apparently someone deliberately removed them,” he declared to radio “Plovdiv”. And the director of the Waterworks – Plovdiv, Eng. Anton Galabov, admits that it is possible that the cyclist, out of curiosity, peeked into the shaft, and that’s how the tragic accident happened .
Day and night after the accident, the shaft was covered with a wooden pallet, rubber and broken tiles from above, “24 Chasa” found. People who were passing by warned that others might also be hurt.
