A real avalanche of projects in Spain

by time news

BarcelonaThe Spanish government wants to promote green hydrogen and many companies have joined in with a veritable avalanche of projects. In fact, Spain has a portfolio of renewable hydrogen projects of more than 15.5 gigawatts (GW), which almost quadruples the 2030 goal of 4 GW marked in the roadmap that the executive approved for this energy vector.

Specifically, in the State as a whole there are already 80 projects spread over the entire geography, mainly on the southern, Cantabrian and Mediterranean coasts due to the fact that they are more industrialized areas. Of these, most are aimed at industrial applications for renewable hydrogen, with a total of 27, and in mobility, with 29. This megaportfolio of projects for the development of more than 15 GW of installed power lada of electrolyzers, although many will probably not become consolidated, demonstrates the interest triggered by green hydrogen.

Sources from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge considered that this avalanche of projects in Spain gave “a clear vision that the 4 GW target will be reached and exceeded” at the end of this decade. Likewise, they pointed out that in the revision of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), which the executive is working on for next year, there will surely be an upward revision of this milestone of renewable hydrogen in 2030.

Energy projects

All the major Spanish energy companies have projects along these lines. Cepsa announced plans to build Europe’s largest green hydrogen project in Andalusia with an investment of 3 billion euros, with two new plants, with a capacity of 2 GW each and an output of up to 300,000 tons of green hydrogen. The project will be accompanied by an additional investment of 2,000 million euros for the development of a portfolio of 3 GW wind and solar energy projects.

Repsol heads the Shyne project, with which it expects to allocate investments of more than 2.2 billion euros, which has goals to install 500 megawatts (MW) in 2025 and 2 GW in 2030. In addition, this project aspires to generate an ecosystem that connects the major regional initiatives around hydrogen that are already being launched, such as the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C), the Vall de l’Hydrogen de Catalunya and the Vall de the Hydrogen of the Region of Murcia. Along with Repsol, Shyne also includes Enagás, Navantia, Sidenor and Tubacex, among other companies.

Iberdrola launched together with Fertiberia a comprehensive project that envisages the development of 800 megawatts (MW) of green hydrogen with an investment of 1.8 billion euros until 2027. In addition, the electric company has been awarded the construction and operation for ten years of a hydrogen plant that will be used by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) buses and other fleets and industries in the Free Zone. Endesa will also develop green hydrogen generation facilities in As Pontes (Galicia), thanks to the project that promotes up to 100 MW of electrolyzer that will be supplied with the wind projects in the area that already have connection rights. Naturgy has an alliance with Exolum, called Win4H2, to deploy a network of 50 hydrogen plants throughout the State.

International project

But this interest in green hydrogen in Spain is not limited to companies in the country, but also attracts international investors. The Danish shipping company Maersk announced the intention to establish in Spain a large hub of production of green methanol and ammonia for fuels in the maritime sector from hydrogen, which could mean an investment of around 10,000 million euros.
