A live-action version of the 2004 film “The Terminal” starring Tom Hanks, which depicts a man stranded at an airport with nowhere to go, has been released.

Word has started spreading on social media that a Haitian man has been living in a Chilean airport for two years.

According to local media outlets such as The Chilean and Biobio Chile on the 20th, a 44-year-old man named Joseph has been staying at the Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago, Chile since 2022.

His strange story was made public by TikTok user jennyguzmanm. In the TikTok video, the man says, “I’m stuck. I want to leave, but I don’t have money to buy a plane ticket. Life here is too hard. I want to leave.”

Joseph reportedly went to the Dominican Republic in 2016 to find work and then entered Chile.

He worked at a construction site for a while and was laid off in 2021. After that, he suffered from severe financial difficulties and reportedly lost his Chilean identity card and all related documents.

Unable to find a job any longer since 2022, he has been living off of relief goods and donations he received from passengers at the airport.

The sight of him wandering around the airport with his luggage on a cart resembled the main character in the movie ‘Terminal’ and the video began to spread through social media.

He is seeking humanitarian assistance to leave Chile. Joseph said he would be willing to be deported from Chile, saying, “I want to go to Haiti or Mexico, but there is no one who can help me.”

However, it has not been confirmed whether this man’s claim is true. Some say that he is a vagrant with mental problems, as he mutters to the air in the video. Also, the main character in the movie is different in that he cannot return because his home country disappeared in a coup.

This story was also relayed to the Haitian embassy in Chile. The embassy is reviewing whether to provide assistance, the media reported.
