Morocco announced Thursday the implementation of emergency aid aimed at supporting and rehousing the inhabitants of around 50,000 buildings damaged by the powerful earthquake that hit the country last week.

Affected residents must be temporarily rehoused “in structures designed to withstand the cold and bad weather, or in reception sites equipped with all the necessary amenities”, indicated the royal cabinet in a press release, published in resulting from a meeting chaired by King Mohammed VI.

The number of homeless people unknown

The Moroccan state will also “grant emergency aid of 30,000 dirhams (around 2,750 euros) to households affected” by the disaster, according to this source which specifies that this is a first part of the program involving approximately 50,000 totally or partially collapsed housing units.

The earthquake, which occurred on the night of September 8 to 9 in the province of Al-Haouz south of Marrakech, left 2,946 dead and 5,674 injured according to the latest official report published Wednesday evening.

The number of homeless people resulting from this earthquake, which devastated many homes in villages located in mountainous areas that are sometimes very difficult to access, is not known.

Financial aid planned

According to the royal cabinet, 140,000 dirhams (around 12,800 euros) will be allocated to “completely collapsed housing” and 80,000 dirhams (around 7,300 euros) will be dedicated to the rehabilitation of partially affected homes.

Faced with the scale of the disaster, Moroccan authorities have asked countries such as Spain, Great Britain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to send search and rescue teams. The Red Cross has launched a fundraising appeal for around 100 million euros to support relief operations.
