A painting by Rembrandt was sold at an auction in the state of Maine, USA, for 1.4 million US dollars, AP reported.

The 17th-century work called Portrait of a Girl, painted by Dutch artist Rembrandt Harmensohn van Rijn, was discovered by art appraiser and auctioneer Kaja Vejlo in the attic of a mansion in the US state of Maine. A label on the back of the frame noted that the painting was given to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for an exhibition in 1970.

“With home visits, we often go in blind, not knowing what we’re going to find,” he said in a statement. “The house was full of wonderful objects, but it was in the attic, among piles of art, that we found this remarkable portrait.”

Born in 1606, Rembrandt was a prolific artist who worked on a variety of subjects, from portraits and landscapes to historical and biblical scenes.

“Portrait of a Girl” is painted on an oak panel and placed in a hand-carved gold Dutch frame, Veillo said, BTA reports.

The artwork was sold on August 24 to a collector from Europe at an auction by Thomaston Place Auction Galleries.
