In recent days, the organization’s hotline has received several calls from merchants who sell four species wholesale, about goods worth tens of thousands of shekels being stolen in the dead of night.
Immediately after receiving the complaints, several teams from the Hashomerim organization arrived at the scene of the theft and checked the security cameras. From watching the cameras it emerged that all the thefts were committed by one suspect.
The picture of the suspect was circulated internally by the organization’s volunteers and they were asked to be vigilant and try to identify the suspect selling the stolen goods.
Last night, late at night, the suspect was identified by one of the volunteers as he was selling the stolen goods at a stand near the Itzkovitz Synagogue.
The suspect, a resident of Elad, in his 25s, was detained at the scene until the arrival of the police forces, who took him to the police station for further questioning. Later it will be decided whether to bring him before a judge for the purpose of extending his detention.
The CEO of Hashomerim Haim Roter, who was present when the suspect was apprehended: “In these troubled days before the holiday, we see an increase in theft attempts. The organization’s volunteers are deployed throughout the city in order to prevent this type of phenomenon. We will not allow the parties on the fringes to damage the holiday atmosphere of the city’s residents.”
