The case of the spouses was considered by the Minsk Regional Court. According to the case file, on January 14, 2023, Anastasia and Alexander Taratuty beat their three-year-old son Semyon to death. Immediately before his death, the boy was hit 9 times, 7 of them on the head. As a result, the child suffered a closed craniocerebral injury, which caused a hemorrhage under the meninges, complicated by swelling of the brain and spinal cord, Sb.by reported.

On October 18, the state prosecutor requested the death penalty for Alexander Taratuta.

To Alexander’s wife, the accused Anastasia Taratutathe prosecutor asked to impose 25 years of imprisonment in a penal colony of strict regime (this is the maximum punishment for a woman in Belarus).

The state prosecutor noted that both of the defendants pose an exceptional danger to society, and the circumstances of the criminal case of murder and torture of a small child Seeds cause shock.

On October 19, the judge agreed with the prosecutor and found the couple guilty.

As a result, Anastasia was sentenced to 25 years in a penal colony under strict regime, and Alexander was sentenced to death by firing squad.

As Anastasiya Taratuta’s former accomplice told human rights defenders “Viasna”, after she was detained in the Slutsk department of the Investigative Committee, she was beaten with a bare electric wire with the demand to give confessional statements.

According to Anastasia’s accomplice, after Alexander started beating the child, she turned to the police, but he was only fined.

In 2023, she consulted with social services about divorce, but they advised to “keep the family.”

Death penalty in Belarus

Belarus remains the last country in Europe where the death penalty is imposed. In total, more than 300 death sentences were handed down in Belarus during the years of independence. The Belarusian authorities do not report on the execution of death sentences. It is possible to learn about this from the testimony of other death row prisoners or from human rights defenders who are in contact with the relatives of the condemned. The European Union periodically calls on Belarus to abandon the death penalty. Despite all the requests of the international community, Lukashenka’s regime continues to issue death sentences. On October 19, 2023, another one of them was sentenced – to Alexander Taratutu from Slutsk, who killed a 3-year-old child.
