The retirement benefit covers the loss of income that a person suffers when, after reaching the established age, they end their working life. Although a person will receive “a lifetime pension, unique and imprescriptible”, as explained by Social Security, not all aid is the same, but rather it will vary depending on age, the years in which contributions have been made, as well as the activity developed.

Agricultural workers included in the Special Agrarian Regime (REA), as well as the employers to whom they provide their services, were integrated into the General Social Security Regime on January 1, 2012, through the establishment of a system especially for these workers. In this sense, they will be entitled to Social Security benefits under the same terms and conditions as in the General Regime, but with the particularities established by regulation.

However, farm workers, that is, both farmers and retiring ranchers, face a much tougher scenario compared to the economic perceptions for retirement of the rest of the Spanish sectors.

In Spain, according to Social Security data as of January 1, 2022 provided to LA RAZÓN, agricultural workers had the following average retirement pension:

  • Farmers and ranchers of the General Regime: 676,89 euros.
  • Autonomous farmers and ranchers: 665,50 euros.

Instead, the average retirement pension of the General Regime, that is, of salaried workers, reached 1,396.22 euros per month in January 2022. In this sense, farmers and ranchers received a benefit 51.3% lower than that of other workers.

In the case of the average retirement benefit of the Special Scheme for Self-Employed Workers (RETA) stood at 829.56 euros per month in January 2022, well below that of the General Regime. In this context, there is a monthly difference between the two of 566.66 euros, which is mainly due to the fact that the majority of self-employed workers opted for the minimum contribution base. If the retirement of the self-employed is compared with that of the agricultural self-employed, the difference represents a 19.8% less benefit than the rest of the workers.

pension increase

Expenditure on pensions has increased in the last year, for which reason the differences between what a retiree receives from the General Scheme and one from the Special Scheme for Self-Employed workers has increased.

Thus, the average retirement pension of salaried workers reached 1,527.80 euros per month, while that of self-employed workers amounted to 910.90 euros per month, 67.72% less than that of the General Regime, which means a monthly difference between the two of 616.90 euros.
